Darth Maul

DX is the top of the HotToys line. The pack has to say so before anyone opens it, and on a black box that has to come from the printing itself.

Two directions, for two sides of the same character. Maul is disciplined and powerful but not to be trusted, and graffiti with watercolour splash holds both at once — controlled and feral in the same mark. Red and black throughout, the colours he is remembered by. The black route went to production. Every decision after that was about where the sense of quality would come from. I created the artwork with the product itself as the style guid can only tell the movie but it cannot tell what diefin the product, the packaging does.

Silver metallic card as the substrate, not a foil on white board. White ink lays down only under the areas that must hold true colour, and the process colour prints over it — so wherever the white is left out, the silver comes up through the red. The sheen lives inside the artwork and moves with the box. Matte lamination, then spot matte UV over the film. Both matte, because the restraint is the point. A gloss spot announces itself; a matte one is only found by touch, and it leaves the metallic areas free to do the shifting. Quality that has to be handled to be noticed reads as more expensive than quality that shouts. Finally, i also designed the metal photo-etched parts as the gift card to present the high end level of the product.
